bullet  General Notes:

As you are no doubt aware, the Curteis family were originally from Tenterden in Kent. Jeremiah Curteis established himself as an attorney in Rye (ref DAP), where he was Town Clerk from 1756-1800. He served as steward of the Frewens' Brickwall Estate in the latter part of the eighteenth century (FRE 5704-6759). Both he and his son, Edward Jeremiah, purchased extensive land both in the area of Rye, and also in Tenterden, Goudhurst, Hawkhurst and the Romney Marsh. From 1807 their principal residence was Windmill Hill House, Wartling (SAS/JC 187-88). The marriage of Jeremiah's daughter Martha to Robert Mascall in 1790 and their daughter Caroline to Herbert B Curteis in 1821 brought them an interest in Peasmarsh Place and the extensive Mascall estates, Jeremiah died 31 Dec 1806 (SAS/JC 363)
His son, Edward Jeremiah and his children, were important landowners and political figures in eastern Sussex. Edward Jeremiah combined legal practice with a political career; he was MP for Sussex 1820-30, while his children represented Rye and the eastern division at various times between 1830-52. They were related to the banking firm of G E and W Jemmett and W Curteis of Ashford and London, while E J Curteis owned his own bank in Rye.
According to AMS 4898, dd 9 Aug. 1777, East Sussex Record Office, Printed Sale Particulars - From Scope and Content:Land in Peasmarch, Manor of Knell and Great Knelle Farm etc. The sale was finally concluded in 1788 when Jeremiah Curteis of Rye bought it for 16.050 lbs exclusive timber. He died in 1806 when his son Edward succeeded and held the manor in 1835. Great Knelle still exists as a farm. It is a lovely building with five bay windows. The surrounding cottages are being let to visitors
